Both formats do have their own advantages and thus I do not believe that with the advent of ebooks, paperbacks will soon be "forgotten". Much like anything in this world, people have varying preferences and thus the surpassing of a possible competition will not easily eliminate the other, especially if the latter has already established for many long generations. For a self-publisher, their reach will be extensive if books are formatted as ebook and the peprback versions, only if they can risk the cost of doing both.

very useful ideas. I find these very helpful since I myself have a blog/website to share to my readers. I do believe that it is not enough to have a blog to promote your book but it is also strategically finding a way to come to your readers and make them find you easier. Thanks for these.

Nice post, Ray!

I've been teaching authors about this very subject for years over on my blog -- <a href="http://www.theauthorsedge.com" rel="nofollow">www.theauthorsedge.com</a>.

SEO isn't (or shouldn't be, anyway) all that hard for most authors. I think that most authors get tripped up at the very, very beginning and do a poor job at choosing the right keywords to target (as you mention here).

The point about not being too broad or general is spot on. I remember when I started teaching this 3 years ago and was asking a group of authors to tell me what keywords they were trying to rank for, and got a WHOLE LOT of one-word answers -- "love," "success," "marketing," etc.

Needless to say, we had a lot of work to do after that session ;)

Wanted to let you and your readers know that I do have a free 10-part author marketing course that focuses VERY heavily on SEO and getting your site ranked, noticed, and read.

In particular, this video gives some background into the "keyword-picking" section of that course:

<a href="http://theauthorsedge.kajabi.com/fe/13011-constant-publicity-insider-day-6" rel="nofollow">http://theauthorsedge.kajabi.com/fe/13011-constant-publicity-insider-day-6</a>.

Hope you find it useful.

Keep up the good work!

Ellen -

GREAT question - and it's an excellent article idea... but a couple quick notes: 1) e-books to a large degree seem to be much better protected by DRM technology than music - so it's pretty rare (unless a rights-management mistake is made) for an author's book to get distributed for free and 2) copyright is as strong as ever - it's enforcement that has always been the problem. However, in the case of e-books ... see note #1. I'll get started on a new article (I can be a little slow...) on how a self published author can make money from e-books....
